It’s May! Time to celebrate Mary!
When I was in Catholic elementary school, May was a big month. We made Kleenex box shrines to Mary and brought in flowers for the annual May Procession. The bulletin boards in the classrooms began to take on a decidedly Marian flavor.  This is what happens when your school is run by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary: the BVM is a Very Big Deal.
I loved it all. Even in my college years and early twenties, when I was deliberately shedding my Catholic skin, I always looked back on those Marian celebrations with a huge sense of nostalgia and affection.  They were beautiful and light-hearted and lovely.  And those positive memories played a crucial role in bringing me back to Catholicism over ten years ago.
Part of me wishes I were still that kid, honoring Mary by bringing a flower from the backyard to put at her feet. But now I can honor her on this blog: a little cyber-shrine, a way to share Mary with others.
The technology may be new, but the message is the same: Mary is a gift worth celebrating. Always has been; always will be.
